What is the difference between live-in care and 24-hour home care?
With live-in care, one caregiver is booked for the 24 hour period. The caregiver is allowed an 8-hour sleeping break, and a bed is provided for the caregiver.
With 24-hour home care, two or more caregivers are booked for the 24 hour period to ensure they are at their maximum level of alertness when providing care for a client. There is no sleeping break. However, the client or client’s family can allow the overnight caregiver to sleep if they choose to.
What is the difference between Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)?
RNs primarily administer medication and treatment to patients, coordinate care plans, perform diagnostic tests, analyze results, and offer educational advice to patients and their families. They also oversee other workers such as LPNs, nursing aides, and home care aides.
LPNs, on the other hand, provide more basic medical and nursing care such as blood pressure checks and inserting catheters, discussing health care with patients, and reporting the patient’s status to registered nurses and doctors. They are responsible for the comfort of the patient by helping them bathe or dress, for example.
